Dear Parents, Guardians and Community,
A fairly quiet week at school this week. We do have School Board this Thursday, but other than that all fairly quite and routine... Just the way we like it. We did have a very successful first day with 'Love Maths,' with both our Year 3 and Year 4 teams working with Maree Croft. We are excited about where this will take us as a school.
Mandi Barton, our indigenous artist who designed our sport's uniform top, is visiting the school next week to talk to staff and students. Don't forget we have an Indigenous Culture Parent talk by Helen Christensen at 2:30 on the 16th of August. All are welcome to attend.
What's happening in STEM. With Brittany Rickman leaving and the school now not offering STEM as a specialist subject, what happens now. The school has always offered STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and will continue to offer STEM. In many places STEM has been replaced with STEAM with Arts being the extra 'A'. So STEM is more that just technology. Our classroom teachers have offered STEM as part of their program and when they plan units of work, STEM is considered as part of the planning whether we have a specialist or not. All classes are doing units of work based on Science either this term or next term which is the obvious Science component of STEM, however other technologies will come into those subjects as well as it can in literacy, maths, religious education and other subjects.
Some of the things happening with STEM at the moment
- Year 6 STEM Aviation project.. a group of students learning about and construction model planes using a kit where they will have to test speed and height in preparation for STEM MAD the Melbourne Archdiocesan Catholic School STEM MAD showcase.
- Students using a range of technologies throughout their learning, Chromebooks, Ipads, Beebots, Makey Makey, EV3's and other kits
- 45 Students taking part in the Australian Maths Competition
- Professional Learning for all teachers with 'Love Maths"
- Grade 1/2 Teachers involved in the 'Early Number and Algebra Project.'
- Our Nudel Kart is timetabled into our lunchtimes so students can use and go through the design process.
If we add in the 'A" for Arts... we can add
- Students involved in the Wakakirri Dance competition
- Art lessons from both a specialist teacher and classroom teacher.
- Private Music lessons continued to be offered.
- Specialist Dance Teacher
- Drama Lessons
- Lunchtime Drawing club
- Visit from Butterfly Music (Andrew Chinn in 2022 Drew Lane 2023 August 11) Parents welcome for his whole school concert 2:30 to 3:30

Gospel – Matthew 13:24-30
Jesus proposed another parable to the crowds, saying: “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field.
While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off.
When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well.
The slaves of the householder came to him and said, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?’
He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ His slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’
He replied, ‘No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them.
Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, “First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn.”
Children’s Mass - Sunday 30th July
This weeks theme - Snowballs
This Sunday we will have our second children’s Liturgy and we hope it will be as successful as the first.
We are looking forward to children from St Mary’s school and the Charism team taking on the responsibility of reading at Mass.
We are asking all children wish to read at the Mass have the support of the families.
All children who wish to sing in the choir are welcome.
Monique and I will support all children involved in the Mass with reading and singing practice.
Children chosen to read will be given their reading to practice at home.
We will have a practice in the Church on Friday morning.
The last family mass was a brilliant success!
We saw so many families, and it is evident from the children’s responses that they want to be involved in the masses. We hope this continues.
Thank you for your continued support!
Way of the West Program
Most of the Saints did practical things for people, especially those in need. Accordingly we ask that you help us support the ninth ‘Way of the West’ program.
The program runs for the month of August and asks for donations of food and living essentials to support Refugees and those seeking Asylum in the West.
There will be a box in each classroom for families to drop off their donations.
In the coming weeks you will see posters around the school, items in the newsletter and the Charism team will be visiting the classrooms and speaking at each Assembly to let families know what will be collected each week. Please make sure that donations are in date - especially food items!
This is a kindly reminder that this program will be happening soon and an opportunity to start adding the odd item to your weekly shop. Please do not send items into school until they are asked for as we need to set up the collection tubs.
The order of collections is as follows:
Week 1 - Dried food (healthy breakfast cereals, rice, dried fruits, pulses)
Week 2 - Tinned food (fish, vegetables, pulses)
Week 3 - Toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, sanitary products, nappies)
Week 4 - Other household items (washing powder, dishwashing items, cloths)
Thank you in advance for your support!
